Today I'm going to be talking to you about a challenge I've made for myself, and that I would be thrilled if you would too.
I was thinking the other day about how suddenly and unexpectedly things occur. Someone or something you love could so easily be gone tomorrow.
I'll tell you a story I was told by a friend. There was a girl, nobody ever said anything nice to her, at school. Everyone ignored her, nobody smiled at her, nobody liked her. She was at her wits end, and became depressed to the point that she was going to end her life. But then, one day, someone said, "Hello," to her and smiled at her. It took that much. This girl overcame her depression, and never looked back. That was all it took.
What I am trying to tell you is that it only takes a smile a day and a random act of kindness to make someone happy for the day. When you're having a bad day, you need that compliment or a random act of kindness to get your spirits back up. You never know their situation, what they need. Of course, they won't always be depressed or suicidal, but they could be, you never know, and even if they're not, everybody needs a little kindness and smiles in their lives :) Without kindness, we're nothing, and in this society, its slowly fading.
So the challenge I've set for myself is to give someone I wouldn't normally talk to or be with a smile, and a random act of kindness - not something that is a dare or triggered by something else or doing it for something back for myself, just an act of kindness and a smile to someone I wouldn't usually.
The Random Act of Kindness Website (click on those words to visit it), says:
"A sincere smile is a very kind and meaningful way to make a positive difference in someone's day. Without using words, a smile says to a person “Hi, I hope you have a nice day”. People appreciate being noticed and acknowledged, especially with a friendly smile. Smiling at a stranger is a positive human interaction that seems to be infrequent as people get caught up in their daily tasks. So next time you are at the store, walking down the street, or going to work or school, acknowledge someone with a smile."
So, really, all you need to do is give someone a smile or a random act of kindness, because that really is all that it takes! Tell that shy boy in your maths class that you can't believe how great he is at maths, or tell that quiet girl in your class that her hair looks pretty today. Its not difficult, and it makes such a difference. Because that will aspire her to do a random act of kindness to someone else, who'll continue it...
So, do you think you can do it?
Here are some pictures to inspire you..
Give that one smile, and make a difference!
